A community is in mourning after a devastating crash on Tasmania's remote west coast claimed the lives of a teenage girl and a man during the school holidays.
Teenager Identified Following Fatal Collision
The young victim has been identified as 16-year-old Adasyn Wood Savin from Newcastle. She was visiting the town of Rosebery for a holiday when the tragedy unfolded. A close friend, Ella Mackrell, shared heartfelt words on a fundraising page established to support Adasyn's family, describing her as a girl who was "having fun, spending time with friends, and making memories the way any 16-year-old should."
Tasmania Police reported that the fatal incident occurred around 4:30 pm on the Murchison Highway, between Zeehan and Rosebery. Adasyn was riding a red Honda all-terrain vehicle (ATV) when it collided with a Mitsubishi Triton utility. She died at the scene alongside a 38-year-old man who was also on the ATV.
Community Rallies to Support Grieving Family
The online fundraiser, which has already amassed more than $17,000 in donations, aims to cover significant costs for the family. These expenses include bringing Adasyn home to Newcastle, funeral arrangements, flights for her mother to travel to Tasmania, and accommodation.
"No family should ever have to worry about finances while grieving the loss of their child," the fundraising page states. Adasyn is survived by her parents, Amber and Adam, her brothers James and Hayden, and extended family and friends. The post poignantly noted that she is now reunited with her brother Cooper, "watching over their family from the stars."
The fundraiser also expressed gratitude to the interstate tourists who stopped to help at the remote crash site and to the emergency services who responded.
Police Investigation Underway
The driver of the Mitsubishi Triton, a 40-year-old man, was not physically injured. Police confirmed he will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing as part of standard procedures.
A report is now being prepared for the coroner while investigations into the exact cause of the Murchison Highway crash continue. Authorities have urged anyone with information or dash cam footage from the area at the time to contact Tasmania Police.
