Ocean Grove resident Gill Hodgson spent decades as an oncology nurse, caring for patients battling cancer. Now, she finds herself on the other side of the bed, facing her own diagnosis.
A Role Reversal
For 30 years, Hodgson provided comfort and treatment to cancer patients at Geelong Hospital. Her expertise in oncology made her a pillar of strength for countless families. But in early 2023, her world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.
“It was surreal,” Hodgson said. “I’ve been the one holding hands, explaining treatments, and now I’m the patient.”
Facing the Diagnosis
Hodgson discovered a lump during a routine self-examination. Despite her medical knowledge, she admitted feeling fear and uncertainty. “You know the statistics, but when it’s you, it’s different,” she said.
She underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy, drawing on her professional experience to navigate the grueling treatment. “I knew what to expect, but the emotional toll is something you can’t prepare for,” she added.
Support from the Community
Hodgson’s journey has been buoyed by the support of her family and the Ocean Grove community. Her husband, Mark, has been her primary caregiver, while friends have organized meal trains and hospital visits.
“The community has been incredible,” Hodgson said. “It’s humbling to receive the same kindness I once gave.”
Advice for Patients
Drawing from her dual perspective, Hodgson offers advice to newly diagnosed patients: “Ask questions, lean on your support network, and don’t be afraid to express your fears. You are not alone.”
She also emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy. “As a nurse, I saw patients who were too shy to speak up. Now I know how vital it is to voice your concerns.”
A New Purpose
Now in remission, Hodgson plans to use her experience to support others. She is volunteering with cancer support groups and speaking at local events.
“Cancer changes you,” she reflected. “But it also gives you a new purpose. If my story can help even one person, it’s worth sharing.”
Hodgson’s journey from caregiver to patient offers a unique perspective on resilience and the power of community. Her story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
