A major police manhunt is underway in Far North Queensland after a man described as "very dangerous" scaled the walls of Cairns Hospital and escaped, triggering a massive search operation involving specialist units.

Dramatic Escape from Hospital Custody

The incident began on Tuesday evening, April 8, when the man was being treated at Cairns Hospital under police guard. In a brazen escape, the patient managed to climb over a wall within the hospital grounds and fled the scene. Queensland Police were immediately notified and launched a significant operation to locate him.

Police have identified the wanted man as Zahn Anthony Fisher, 29. Authorities have issued a stern warning to the public, urging them not to approach Fisher if seen. He is considered a significant risk. Police are also searching for another man, Shawn Henry Mepham, 31, who is believed to be assisting Fisher and is likewise considered dangerous.

Large-Scale Police Operation Deployed

The search effort involves multiple police resources, including the Dog Squad, PolAir, and the Cairns Property Crime Team. Officers have been conducting targeted raids on properties believed to be connected to the two men. One such raid occurred on Wednesday morning at a residence in Manoora, a suburb of Cairns.

Detective Acting Inspector Kevin Goan addressed the media, confirming the active search. "We have a number of resources allocated to this investigation," he stated. The police are pursuing several lines of inquiry and are calling on the community for assistance.

Police have released photographs of both Fisher and Mepham and are appealing for any information regarding their whereabouts.
