M8D8 Campaign Returns to Boost Men's Mental Health in Peel

Youth Focus, a Mandurah-based mental health services provider, has relaunched its two-month M8D8 campaign aimed at encouraging struggling men to open up about their mental health.

Campaign Origins and Impact

The M8D8 campaign was first created in 2020 in collaboration with young men from the Peel region, responding to the high rates of suicide in that age group. It was a joint winner of the Prevention or Promotion Award at the 2024 WA Mental Health Awards.

The campaign features videos of young men discussing why conversations with friends are vital. Through these videos and engagement in schools, workplaces, and community groups across Peel, M8D8 seeks to normalise mental health discussions, build support networks, and reinforce the importance of friendships for positive mental health.

Local Support and Testimonials

Youth Focus South West regional manager Mark Barrett-Lennard expressed hope that young men would see reflections of their own friendships in the campaign. "Young men are already there for their mates — they show up every day, listening and problem-solving," he said. "M8D8 is all about celebrating this, while reminding young men that sometimes they might have to speak up and help their mates get more support. It's about talking more, and talking early, so that things don't build up. It's about knowing you are not alone when things are tough."

The campaign is supported by Alcoa, whose human resources director Liz Hodgson highlighted its alignment with the company's values. "As a major employer in the Peel and South West, many of our apprentices, tradespeople and graduates live and work in regional communities where young men can face greater social pressures, isolation and life stressors," she said. "We care deeply about mental health and wellbeing, not only at our sites but beyond the gate. By encouraging early, honest and informed conversations about mental health, M8D8 helps strengthen social connections and reduce the stigma young men can feel about speaking up."
