Bondi Officer Jack Hibbert, 22, Home for Christmas After Terror Attack
Injured Bondi Police Officer Released for Christmas

One of the young police officers critically wounded in the Bondi Junction terror attack has achieved a significant milestone, being discharged from hospital just in time to spend Christmas at home with his family.

A Young Officer's Courage and Recovery

Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, aged 22, was shot in the head and shoulder during the violent incident at the Hanukkah celebration on December 14. Having served in the New South Wales Police Force for a mere four months, Hibbert was on patrol when the attack unfolded. His injuries have resulted in the loss of vision in one eye.

After undergoing multiple complex surgeries, Hibbert's family shared the positive news of his discharge in a statement released on Tuesday. "While he is home, he is still recovering and will need space, support, and continued positive thoughts during this time," the statement read.

The family expressed profound relief and gratitude, stating, "As a family, we couldn’t ask for anything more — having our Jack home, especially for Christmas, truly feels like a miracle." They extended heartfelt thanks to friends, colleagues, the wider community, and the "exceptional" medical staff who treated the young officer.

Privacy and Ongoing Support Requested

In their message, Hibbert's relatives also made a request for privacy as they focus on his rehabilitation. "We kindly ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we focus on Jack’s recovery and spend this special time together," they said. The family concluded their statement with a personal note to Jack: "Jacko you’ve shown strength of a different degree, we are so glad you’re home buddy."

Another Officer Still in Hospital

The attack left another young officer fighting for his life. Constable Scott Dyson, 25, was also shot, sustaining wounds to his shoulder and stomach. As one of the first responders on the scene, Dyson was critically injured and remains in intensive care in a serious but stable condition.

Dyson, who graduated from the police academy only in June last year, recently received the life-changing news that he is going to become a father. His recovery continues under close medical supervision.

The Broader Impact of the Bondi Attack

The mass shooting at Bondi Junction left a trail of injury and trauma across the community. As of Tuesday morning, 12 people injured in the attack remain hospitalised across various Sydney medical facilities. Of those 12 patients, four are reported to be in a critical but stable condition, underscoring the severe nature of the violence that day.

The release of Constable Hibbert offers a beacon of hope during the festive season, highlighting the resilience of those affected and the long road to recovery that still lies ahead for many.
