Staff and patients at a major regional hospital have been left deeply shaken after a man allegedly forced his way into the facility and embarked on a violent rampage. The disturbing incident occurred at University Hospital Geelong, causing significant trauma within the healthcare setting.

Chaos and Violence in a Place of Healing

The alleged intruder, a 41-year-old man from Norlane, is accused of creating a scene of chaos within the hospital's walls. According to police reports, the man forced entry into the hospital through the emergency department just before 10pm on Tuesday, April 29.

Once inside, the situation escalated rapidly. It is alleged the man proceeded to assault a security guard and a nurse who were attempting to intervene. The violence did not stop there, as he is also accused of damaging hospital property during the frightening episode.

Lasting Impact on Hospital Community

The incident has had a profound effect on the hospital's staff and the patients who witnessed the event. A spokesperson for Barwon Health, the organisation that operates University Hospital Geelong, acknowledged the distress caused.

In a statement, Barwon Health confirmed that staff and patients were offered immediate support in the aftermath of the traumatic event. "The safety and wellbeing of our staff, patients and visitors is our highest priority," the spokesperson said. The organisation is also reportedly reviewing the circumstances of the incident.

This violent breach of a healthcare facility has raised concerns about safety protocols in places that are dedicated to care and recovery. The community is left grappling with the unsettling reality that such an event could occur in a regional hospital like the one in Geelong.
