A major new health support service has launched, providing Australians with free and immediate access to professional medical guidance at any time of day or night. The 1800MEDICARE hotline, officially announced on 6 January 2026, is now operational nationwide.
What The Service Offers
The hotline, 1800 633 422, is designed as a first point of contact for non-emergency health concerns. When you call, you will be connected directly to a registered nurse. This qualified professional will listen to your symptoms, provide an initial assessment, and guide you towards the most appropriate course of care.
A key feature of the service is its accessibility. You do not need a Medicare card to use it, making it free and available to a wide range of people including international visitors, students, and others who may not be covered by Medicare. It can be used by anyone seeking advice for themselves, a child, an elderly relative, or someone in their care.
Broader Benefits and Accessibility
The introduction of 1800MEDICARE is expected to have significant positive effects on the national healthcare system. By offering a trusted alternative for non-urgent issues, it aims to help people make more informed decisions and, crucially, reduce unnecessary pressure on public hospital emergency departments.
The service is committed to inclusivity. People who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech difficulties can access it through the National Relay Service. For those who speak languages other than English, interpreters are available via TIS National.
Digital Support Through the App
In addition to the phone line, support is available through a dedicated mobile application. The app, which was formerly known as the myhealth app, allows users to manage their health digitally. Key functions include:
- Viewing health information stored in My Health Record.
- Accessing electronic prescriptions and an active script list.
- Finding and booking necessary health services.
Help is available for anyone who needs assistance navigating the app's features.
It is important to note what the service does not do. 1800MEDICARE cannot be used to apply for a Medicare card or to lodge a Medicare claim; those services remain with Services Australia. Most critically, this line is not for emergencies. For life-threatening situations, callers must still dial triple-0 (000) immediately.
While the advice from the hotline is free, it is important to remember that costs may apply for any subsequent treatment or services that are recommended during the call.
