An elderly man is fighting for life after being struck by a vehicle outside Wollongong Private Hospital on Friday, April 24.
The incident occurred on Staff Street, near Crown Street, just before midday. The pedestrian, believed to be in his 80s, sustained severe head injuries, according to a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman.
A bystander who witnessed the aftermath said the man was hit badly. Paramedics treated him on the road before he was transported to hospital.
Corey Baker, a mechanic working nearby at Crown Workshop Tyre Services, did not hear the accident but saw the emergency response. Two ambulances arrived, along with four paramedics and several nurses from the hospital who came to assist. Baker described seeing blood running down the road.
Multiple ambulances and police were called to the scene. A rescue helicopter was deployed from Shellharbour Airport to Wollongong Hospital. Medical teams are treating the man, who remains in critical condition, and he may be transferred to a trauma hospital in Sydney.
NSW Police have been contacted for comment. More details to follow.
