Former Essendon captain Jobe Watson has heaped praise on West Australian draftee Jacob Farrow, commending the young midfielder for his impressive start to his AFL career with the Bombers.
Watson, a Brownlow Medalist and club legend, said Farrow's dedication and work ethic have stood out since he was selected in the recent AFL draft. The 18-year-old from Western Australia has already made a strong impression on teammates and coaching staff.
"Jacob has come in with a fantastic attitude. He's really keen to learn and improve, and that's exactly what you want from a young player," Watson told reporters. "He's got some great attributes, and he's already showing signs that he can make an impact at this level."
Farrow's Journey to the Bombers
Farrow, who played his junior football with the Subiaco Lions in the WAFL, was taken by Essendon with pick 33 in the 2024 AFL draft. The talented on-baller impressed scouts with his speed, agility, and ball-winning ability throughout the under-18 championships.
Watson, who served as Essendon captain from 2010 to 2016, believes Farrow's background in Western Australia's strong football system has prepared him well for the demands of elite-level competition.
"The WA system produces some really good players, and Jacob is a great example of that. He's been well-coached and developed, and that's showing in the way he's adapted to our program," Watson said.
Early Impressions at the Club
Essendon's development coaches have also been impressed with Farrow's progress during pre-season training. The young midfielder has been putting in extra sessions to work on his endurance and strength, with the aim of breaking into the senior side as soon as possible.
"He's got a really good understanding of the game, and he's not afraid to ask questions. That's a sign of someone who wants to get better," a club insider said. "We're excited about what he can bring to the team in the future."
Farrow himself said he is grateful for the support from Watson and the club. "It's been a dream come true to be drafted by Essendon. Jobe is a legend of the club, so to hear that from him means a lot," Farrow said. "I'm just focused on working hard and doing whatever I can to help the team."
The Bombers are hopeful that Farrow can add depth to their midfield, which already boasts stars like Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish. With the guidance of experienced players like Watson, Farrow is expected to develop into a key contributor in the coming seasons.
