Community Rallies After Tragic Death of 13-Year-Old Boy from Diabetes Complications
The tight-knit community of Weston in Newcastle is reeling from the sudden and tragic death of 13-year-old Tomas Kerswell, who passed away from complications related to type 1 diabetes earlier this week. Friends, family, and local residents have come together to support his grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
A Life Cut Short: Remembering Tomas Kerswell
Tomas Kerswell has been remembered by those who knew him as an authentic, energetic, and humorous young man who had a remarkable ability to bring people together. His mother, Joanne Finucane, described her son as someone who lived life by "enjoying the moment" and wasn't overly concerned about the future. "He wasn't sure what he wanted to do when he got older, but he wanted me to take him on a cruise," she shared, highlighting his youthful spirit and simple dreams.
Family friend Edwina Carle spoke about the profound impact of Tomas's passing, stating, "His absence will be felt deeply every single day. No family should have to endure the heartbreak of losing a child, especially so suddenly." Tomas is survived by his twin sister, Emma, with whom he shared a strong bond, and his parents, Joanne and Ben.
The Sudden Onset of Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Tomas, who had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, became ill on Sunday with what initially appeared to be a minor stomach bug. According to Ms. Carle, he experienced some vomiting but did not seem "concerningly unwell" at first. He was even up on Monday morning checking his blood sugar levels as part of his routine management of the condition.
However, his condition deteriorated rapidly due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication that occurs when the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. This life-threatening condition can develop when there is insufficient insulin in the body, causing it to break down fat for fuel instead of glucose. Dehydration is suspected to have played a significant role in exacerbating the situation.
"Within an hour of last seeing him, his mum went to check on him and he wasn't breathing," Ms. Carle recounted. Despite efforts to save him, Tomas tragically died on Monday, leaving his family and community in shock.
Friends and Community Unite in Support
In response to this heartbreaking loss, a GoFundMe campaign titled "Help Tomas Kerswell's family with funeral and expenses" has been established to provide financial support for funeral costs and to help the family navigate their grief. Ms. Carle expressed hope that the funds raised would "ease some of the stress, so they can focus on healing and remembering him."
Tomas's friends have also been deeply affected by his passing. Jackson Carle, a 13-year-old mate from Elermore Vale who attended Wallsend South Public School with Tomas, described him as someone who was always true to himself. "He didn't change around other people. He was very energetic. He spoke his mind. He was big into video games," Jackson said, reflecting on their shared love for soccer and gaming.
The pair played soccer together with the South Wallsend Junior Soccer Club, which released a statement expressing their condolences: "Our thoughts are with the family. Tomas will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and former teammates."
A Young Life Full of Passion and Connection
Tomas was known for his vibrant personality and diverse interests. He enjoyed playing video games with his father, Ben, and was an active participant on Discord, a social gaming platform where he connected with friends from both his former and current schools. His ability to bring people together was a hallmark of his character, fostering a sense of community among his peers.
He also had a deep affection for animals, particularly his dogs, Billy and Maddie, and his sister Emma's pet rabbit, Cotton. "They were at the heart of his world," Ms. Carle noted, underscoring the joy these pets brought to his life.
As the community continues to mourn, friends like Jackson have taken time off school to process their grief, engaging in activities such as bike rides and spending time with family to cope with the loss. The outpouring of support highlights the significant impact Tomas had on those around him and the collective effort to honor his memory while supporting his family through this unimaginable tragedy.
