Perth's Elite Gym Chain Faces Backlash Over $585 Weekly Platinum Membership

A boutique fitness chain operating in Perth, known as Chris Wilson Fitness Studio, has ignited a fierce online debate after details of its premium Platinum membership, priced at a staggering $585 per week, were revealed. This exclusive offering has left many locals questioning who in the city can afford such a luxury, with some noting it rivals weekly rent payments for families.

Exclusive Offerings and Public Reaction

Chris Wilson Fitness Studio runs four centres in affluent Perth neighbourhoods, including Nedlands, Applecross, Highgate, and South Perth. While the gym provides more accessible Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold+ memberships ranging from $65 to $95 per week, it is the Platinum tier that has caused a stir. This membership includes a 20-point list of benefits, such as pricey dinners, limited edition merchandise, tailored nutrition plans, and unlimited classes.

The controversy gained traction on social media, particularly through a viral TikTok post by user Hannah Northcott, who asked followers if they would ever pay such a high fee. The post garnered over 100 comments, with many expressing disbelief at the steep price. One user remarked, "The real question is who in Perth is in a position to afford this," while another added, "I’m in Perth and that’s what I pay in rent in Inglewood. I could never afford that and it’s ridiculous." Some suggested that such an offering might be better suited to East Coast markets like Melbourne, where high-end gyms are more common.

Defense from the Gym and Its Founder

In response to the criticism, a member of the gym chain defended the Platinum membership, highlighting its value. They noted that the package includes three personal training sessions weekly, worth approximately $300 alone, and argued there is a market for it in upscale areas. Founder Chris Wilson, who moved to Perth from Wales in 2012 with minimal funds, launched the brand in 2021 and has seen positive feedback. He stated that his studios cater to a high-end demographic, including CEOs, business owners, doctors, and lawyers who value privacy and expert coaching.

Wilson explained that each studio is capped at 75 members to maintain a sense of community and avoid overcrowding, designed to feel "more like hospitality than a typical gym." He compared the offering to luxury goods, saying, "You can buy a coffee for $2 at a petrol station, or $7 at a premium café. You can buy a handbag for $80 or $30,000 at Louis Vuitton. Not everyone buys the Louis Vuitton bag — but it exists for the people who want it." He also mentioned that many clients invest significantly in their health, with spending often reaching $300 to $600 weekly across various services.

Future Plans and Membership Details

Chris Wilson aims to expand to 10 studios by 2030, capitalizing on Perth's growth as a global city and the increasing demand in the wellness industry. The Platinum membership's benefits are extensive, including unlimited classes at multiple studios, Dexa scans, Pilates classes, coffee vouchers, nutrition plans, personal training sessions, meals at high-end restaurants, sauna access, discounts on retreats and spa services, merchandise packs, juice cleanses, and priority booking. Members can cancel anytime without lock-in contracts.

This development raises broader questions about affordability and luxury in Perth's fitness scene, as the city continues to evolve with premium offerings that target a niche, affluent clientele.
