Two Men Face Charges in Connection with Fatal Wrong-Way Truck Crash on Bruce Highway

Two men have been formally charged by police following a tragic incident on the Bruce Highway, where a stolen truck travelling in the wrong direction led to a fatal head-on collision. The charges come after an extensive investigation into the crash that claimed the life of a young driver and left the truck driver in critical condition.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 PM on Tuesday at Burpengary, when a white flat-bed truck was observed travelling on the incorrect side of the highway. The truck collided head-on with a Honda Accord driven by 26-year-old Andre Roberts, who tragically died at the scene. Police have since clarified that the stolen vehicle was a Hino model bearing false registration plates linked to another vehicle, correcting initial reports that identified it as an Isuzu.

Dashcam footage from the crash revealed that the truck was travelling at what police described as "excessive speed" for about one kilometre on the wrong side of the highway, with several vehicles following closely behind. Authorities have indicated that the truck may have been pursued by at least one other vehicle prior to the collision.

Police Investigation and Charges

As part of the ongoing homicide investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at a Redcliffe address on Friday. During the search, they seized allegedly stolen property and a firearm that has been linked to the truck involved in the crash. This development has provided crucial evidence in the case.

A 49-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, both residents of Redcliffe, have been charged with multiple offences, including:

  • Enter premises
  • Unlawful use of a motor vehicle
  • Weapons offences

The two accused individuals are scheduled to appear in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on March 16 to face these charges. Meanwhile, the 46-year-old truck driver remains in a critical condition in hospital and has not yet been interviewed by police due to his medical state.

Ongoing Inquiries and Community Impact

Police have confirmed that as of Sunday, all vehicles involved in the incident have been identified, and a number of people are currently assisting with inquiries. The investigation continues to unfold as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the fatal crash.

This tragic event has highlighted serious concerns about road safety on the Bruce Highway, particularly regarding stolen vehicles and wrong-way driving incidents. The community has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.

Investigations are ongoing, with police committed to ensuring justice is served for the victim and his family. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from dangerous driving behaviour and criminal activities involving motor vehicles.
