Sydney Police Pursuit: Subaru SUV Drives on Three Tyres After High-Speed Crash
In a dramatic early morning incident, a car was driven at high speed through several suburbs of Sydney, continuing even after crashing and losing a tyre during a police pursuit on Tuesday. Dashcam footage from other vehicles captured the intense scene, showing a Subaru SUV leading multiple police vehicles through the main roads of Marrickville at dangerous speeds.
Police Spot Vehicle Without Headlights
Officers first noticed the vehicle driving without headlights on Sydenham Rd in Marrickville around 1.55am on Tuesday. The Subaru was then tracked as it traveled toward the Central Business District (CBD), where it crashed into a parked car on George St. The impact was severe enough to tear the tyre from the front left wheel, leaving the car with only three tyres and a rim.
Pursuit Continues with Police Helicopter
Despite the damage, the driver persisted, continuing the reckless journey on just three tyres. In response, police patrols backed off from the direct pursuit for safety reasons. Instead, they called in a police helicopter to follow the car from above, ensuring it could be monitored without escalating the risk to public safety.
Car Abandoned and Perimeter Established
The Subaru was eventually tracked to Glen St in Marrickville, where it was abandoned by the driver. Officers quickly set up a perimeter around the area to secure the scene and begin their investigation. This swift action helped contain the situation and prevent further incidents.
Arrest Made and Inquiries Ongoing
A 25-year-old man was arrested soon after the car was abandoned. He has been taken to Newtown Police Station, where inquiries are continuing to determine the full circumstances of the pursuit and any potential charges. The arrest marks the end of a chaotic event that highlighted the risks of high-speed chases in urban areas.
This incident underscores the importance of police vigilance and the use of technology, such as helicopters, in managing dangerous pursuits. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity to help maintain community safety.
