Authorities in Queensland are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether a utility vehicle involved in a devastating crash that claimed the life of a mother-of-four was connected to a large-scale illegal hooning event that occurred on the same evening. The tragic incident unfolded on School Road in Logan Reserve, located south of Brisbane, at approximately 9pm on Saturday night.
Details of the Fatal Collision
A 51-year-old woman who was visiting from Victoria for the Easter holiday period lost her life after the Ford Focus hatchback she was travelling in collided head-on with a blue Ford Falcon ute. The Ford Focus was being driven by her 28-year-old niece from Goodna, who sustained significant injuries to her legs, hips, and back, requiring transportation to Logan Hospital for treatment.
Remarkably, the two-year-old daughter of the niece was also present in the vehicle, securely strapped into her car seat in the back. Emergency responders found the toddler alert and crying at the scene, having been properly restrained during the violent impact.
Police Allegations and Witness Accounts
Investigators have alleged that the ute, which was being driven by a 17-year-old girl, crossed onto the wrong side of the road immediately prior to the catastrophic collision. Witness Linton Bewley provided a chilling account of the moments leading up to the crash, stating that the ute was travelling at high speed with its headlights turned off.
"They overtook all three of us with no lights on," Bewley recounted. "We didn't hear them coming. We just saw them shoot straight past the driver's side. Next thing, it's just bang, bang, bang, bang."
