In response, automotive specialists have outlined key adjustments that Western Australian motorists can adopt to optimise their fuel efficiency. These recommendations, provided by the Royal Automotive Club of WA (RAC WA), offer practical solutions to navigate the current crisis.
Select the Appropriate Fuel Type
RAC WA advises drivers to strictly adhere to the fuel grade specified by their vehicle manufacturer, even if alternative petrol options appear cheaper at the pump. Alex Forrest, Manager of Vehicle and Fuels at RAC WA, emphasises that compliance with manufacturer guidelines can prevent costly repair bills in the future.
"Opting for a lower-grade petrol to save money may ultimately cause significant damage to your vehicle over time," Mr Forrest cautioned. He also addressed the concerning trend of petrol stockpiling nationwide, noting that using aged fuel from jerry cans can impair vehicle performance. "Fresh fuel directly from the bowser is optimal for efficiency, making stockpiling a potentially counterproductive strategy," he added.
Adjust Your Driving Techniques
One of the most impactful changes drivers can implement is modifying their driving behaviour to conserve fuel. Mr Forrest highlighted that vehicle operation significantly influences fuel consumption. "Cultivating habits such as gentle acceleration and avoiding harsh braking can substantially reduce fuel usage," he explained.
Aggressive braking and acceleration force engines to exert more effort, leading to heightened fuel consumption. Additionally, automotive experts recommend utilising cruise control on open roads, as this driver-assistance system can reportedly save up to five per cent in petrol expenditure.
Reduce Vehicle Load
Excessive weight can drastically diminish fuel efficiency by overburdening the vehicle. To prolong a full tank, Mr Forrest suggests removing all non-essential items from the boot and rear seats. He further advises drivers to "eliminate unnecessary accessories from the car roof, including roof racks and tents."
Research from Monash University's Accident Research Centre indicates that removing roof racks alone can yield petrol savings of up to fifteen per cent, underscoring the importance of a lighter load.
Prioritise Regular Maintenance
Neglected car maintenance, such as misaligned wheels and under-inflated tyres, can strain the vehicle and result in unnecessary fuel wastage. Mr Forrest urges Perth residents to maintain their vehicles diligently and monitor tyre pressure consistently. "Inadequate tyre pressure increases rolling resistance, which in turn consumes more fuel," he noted.
Compare Prices Before Refuelling
Mr Forrest also stressed the value of using tools like FuelWatch to identify the most cost-effective petrol stations. "For instance, on a recent Wednesday, BP stations charged up to 267.9 cents per litre, while 7-Eleven maintained prices at 229.9 cents," he illustrated. By shopping around, motorists can achieve savings of up to 30 cents per litre, providing significant relief amid the price surge.
