Truck Driver Airlifted in Critical Condition After Hume Motorway Crash Near Berrima
Hume Motorway crash: Driver airlifted, milk spill closes lanes

A serious collision involving two trucks has left one driver fighting for his life and caused significant disruption on a major New South Wales highway this morning.

Early Morning Collision Closes Key Motorway

Emergency services were called to the Hume Motorway at Berrima just before 4am on Thursday, January 8, 2026, following reports of a crash. The incident occurred on the northbound lanes near the turn-off to Greenhills Road.

Initial reports indicate that two heavy vehicles travelling in the same direction collided, causing extensive damage to both trucks. The force of the impact resulted in one of the trucks, which was carrying a load of milk, spilling approximately 100 litres of its cargo across the roadway.

Driver Airlifted in Critical Condition

The driver of one truck, a man believed to be in his 50s, sustained severe injuries in the crash. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the man at the roadside for serious head and chest injuries.

Due to the severity of his condition, a rescue helicopter was tasked to the scene. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter airlifted the injured driver to Liverpool Hospital, where he arrived in a critical condition. Medical staff continue to fight for his life.

The driver of the second truck was physically unharmed but was transported to hospital as a precaution for mandatory drug and alcohol testing, which is standard procedure following major incidents.

Major Traffic Disruption and Clean-Up Underway

The crash has caused considerable disruption for morning commuters and freight operators. Debris from the vehicles was strewn across the crash scene, necessitating a partial closure of the motorway.

Transport for NSW has implemented contraflow traffic conditions to allow motorists to pass in both directions between Medway and Aylmerton. Authorities are advising drivers to expect significant delays and to exercise caution in the area.

For light vehicles, an alternative detour is available via the Old Hume Highway, which rejoins the Hume Motorway at Aylmerton. Clean-up crews are on-site dealing with the spilled milk and vehicle wreckage.

Police Investigation Continues into Separate Picton Road Crash

In a separate incident, police are continuing their investigation into a major six-vehicle crash that occurred on Picton Road at Cataract the previous day, Wednesday, January 7.

That collision, which happened around 11.55am, allegedly involved a four-wheel-drive veering onto the wrong side of the road, causing a truck to take evasive action. The crash resulted in 13 people being treated by emergency services, with six transported to hospital.

The area was declared a crime scene, with forensic police officers conducting a detailed examination. Picton Road was closed for several hours before reopening at 5.30pm.

Authorities are urging all drivers to remain vigilant on the roads, particularly during the busy holiday period when traffic volumes are high.
