A major transport corridor has been thrown into chaos after a B-double truck burst into flames on the Hume Highway near Yass in New South Wales this morning.
Highway Closed After Morning Blaze
The dramatic incident forced the immediate closure of the national inter-city highway in both directions. The fire erupted around 9:30am, with emergency services rushing to the scene. Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) confirmed the severity of the situation, stating the trailer was alight with lithium-ion batteries burning and releasing significant smoke.
Major Traffic Disruption and Health Warning
According to Live Traffic NSW, all traffic is being diverted via Yass Valley Way and the Barton Highway in both directions. Authorities have warned that motorists should expect extensive delays of up to 90 minutes as a result of the closure and diversions.
FRNSW advised that the Hume Highway will remain closed for an extended period while crews work to bring the dangerous blaze under full control. In a serious health warning to locals, residents in the Yass Valley area were told to take precautions due to the toxic smoke.
"If you reside in Yass Valley area and suffer respiratory illness or injury, close windows, vents and doors and stay indoors," FRNSW said. They strongly urged people to avoid going outdoors where possible until the situation is resolved.
