Wanneroo Launches Free Monthly Child Car Seat Safety Checks
Free monthly child car restraint fittings and safety checks are now available to residents of the City of Wanneroo, as part of a new initiative designed to significantly improve child passenger safety on local roads. This pilot community road-safety program, launched in partnership with Kidsafe WA, will commence in Girrawheen later this month and expand across multiple suburbs.
Expanding Access to Expert Support
The program will operate at 10 different locations, stretching from the southern suburbs of Wanneroo all the way to Two Rocks in the north. According to Kidsafe WA, up to 70 per cent of child restraints are incorrectly fitted, a concerning statistic that this initiative aims to address by providing parents with direct access to professional assistance.
Kidsafe WA chief executive Scott Phillips expressed his enthusiasm for the city's involvement, stating, "A properly fitted child car restraint ensures that young passengers can travel safely. This initiative will provide peace of mind to many young families in Wanneroo." Typically, such safety checks can cost up to $40, making this free service a valuable resource for the community.
Commitment to Road Safety
City of Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken highlighted the program's role in the city's broader commitment to enhancing road safety for families. "Correctly fitted child car restraints can save lives," she said. "This program is designed to make safety straightforward and stress-free. Knowing your child's restraint has been installed by a qualified expert gives you real confidence every time you get behind the wheel."
The first session is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, at Girrawheen Library, running from 9.30am to 1.30pm. Subsequent sessions will be held at the Koondoola Community Centre on May 25 and the Hepburn Centre in Marangaroo on June 18, with additional dates and locations to be announced.
How to Participate
Residents interested in taking advantage of this free service can find more information and make bookings online through Eventbrite. This program not only aims to reduce the rate of incorrectly fitted restraints but also fosters a culture of proactive safety measures within the Wanneroo community, ensuring that every child travels securely on every journey.
