A 71-year-old local man was walking his eight-year-old dog Lulu when they attempted to cross the roadway. The pair paused briefly at the pedestrian traffic island situated in the middle of the road before continuing their crossing attempt.
At that moment, a vehicle entered the roundabout and allegedly struck both the man and his canine companion. The impact proved instantly fatal for Lulu, while the pedestrian sustained injuries from being clipped by the passing vehicle.
Police Investigation and Driver Identification
Port Stephens Hunter police were notified after the driver allegedly departed the scene without stopping. Investigators attended a residence at Anna Bay on January 15th, where they spoke with a 65-year-old male driver.
Police immediately suspended the man's driving licence as part of their initial response. Further investigation led authorities to issue two infringement notices on January 24th for negligent driving and failing to provide particulars to an injured person.
