Driver clocked speeding 11 times in 17 minutes, allegedly over twice the legal limit
Driver caught speeding 11 times in 17 minutes in Brisbane

A Brisbane driver is facing serious charges after a remarkable sequence of alleged traffic offences, where police claim he was detected speeding 11 separate times in just 17 minutes while over the legal alcohol limit.

Alleged Reckless Driving Spree on Zillmere Road

The incident unfolded on the afternoon of December 30 on Zillmere Road at Boondall. According to the Queensland Police Service (QPS), a speed camera began repeatedly triggering for a black Alfa Romeo from about 5.10pm.

Police allege the vehicle was detected exceeding the 60km/h speed limit on 11 occasions within a 17-minute window. The alleged speeds were extraordinarily high for the zone, with six of the readings said to be over 100km/h. The highest speed recorded by the camera was a staggering 110km/h.

Positive Breath Test and Court Date Set

Following the multiple camera detections, officers intercepted the vehicle and conducted a roadside breath test (RBT). The driver, a 57-year-old man from Boondall, allegedly returned a positive result.

A subsequent test revealed an alleged blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.092 per cent, which is almost double the legal limit of 0.05 per cent.

The man now faces charges for driving over the prescribed alcohol limit and for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The dangerous driving charge encompasses the alleged speeding and an allegation of taking part in an illegal race. He is scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on January 22.

Police Reinforce Road Safety Message

In a statement following the incident, Queensland Police reiterated their commitment to reducing the state's road toll. They pointed to the Fatal Five behaviours as major contributors to serious crashes: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction.

"Serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the Fatal Five behaviours," a QPS spokesperson said. "Road safety is everyone’s responsibility."

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of combining excessive speed with impaired driving, with the accused now awaiting his day in court to answer the multiple allegations.
