A driver has turned himself in to police following a serious hit-and-run incident in Brisbane's northern suburbs on Friday night, which left a young pedestrian hospitalised with serious injuries.
Pedestrian Struck in Deception Bay
Emergency services were called to Phillip Parade in Deception Bay shortly after 7:20 pm on Friday, following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. According to Queensland Police, a black Nissan Navara utility was travelling along the road when it allegedly hit a 21-year-old woman from Newport.
The incident occurred between Bundaberg Street and Nambour Court. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the ute, is alleged to have fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Driver Presents to Police, Faces Serious Charges
The 49-year-old man from Clontarf later presented himself at a police station. He has since been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and driving under the influence.
The injured pedestrian was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police Appeal for Witnesses and Footage
Detectives from the Forensic Crash Unit have launched an investigation and are now appealing for public assistance. They are particularly keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone who may have relevant CCTV or dashcam footage from the Phillip Parade area around the time of the incident.
The accused driver is scheduled to appear in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on February 3. Police have stated that their investigations into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Queensland Police.
