Divers Escape 4.5m Great White Shark Off WA Coast After Helicopter Alert
Two divers have narrowly escaped a perilous encounter with a massive 4.5-metre great white shark off the South West coast of Western Australia. The incident, which unfolded near the shore at Cape Naturalist, was captured in dramatic aerial footage by the Surf Life Saving WA helicopter.
Close Call in the Waters
The unsuspecting divers were in the water when the apex predator began circling them, inching closer without their knowledge. It was only when the crew aboard the Westpac Life Save Rescue Helicopter sounded a siren that the pair became aware of the looming danger. The shark, estimated to be approximately 10 metres off Cape Naturalist, posed a significant threat as it moved through the waters.
The divers managed to exit the water unharmed by quickly boarding their jet skis and leaving the area. This swift action likely prevented a potential attack, highlighting the importance of vigilance in shark-prone regions.
Helicopter Crew's Critical Role
Surf Life Saving WA reported the incident in a Facebook post, stating, "Yesterday morning our Westpac Life Save Rescue Helicopter spotted a 4.5m white shark approx 10m off Cape Naturalist, circling two divers. Unaware of the danger, our crew sounded the siren alerting the divers who exited the water onto their jet ski and headed to safety." This underscores the vital role that aerial surveillance and quick response teams play in marine safety.
