Crocodile Attack Sparks Urgent Warnings in Port Douglas Area
A large saltwater crocodile has snatched a pet dog from a popular creek near Port Douglas, leading to immediate safety alerts for local residents and visitors. The incident occurred on Spring Creek in the rural community of Mowbray, located south of Port Douglas, at approximately 11:30 AM on Thursday.
Details of the Disturbing Incident
The pet dog was reportedly walking alongside a remote stretch of Spring Creek with its owner when the crocodile, believed to be up to 4 metres in length, attacked and took the animal. The owner witnessed the entire event, which has sent shockwaves through the local community. After seizing the dog, the crocodile was observed floating upstream towards the Mowbray River Road causeway.
Authorities suspect this crocodile may be the same one photographed relaxing on the creek bank in late last year by local resident Bernie Nagan. This area is known for its pristine rainforest setting and includes a swimming hole that is frequently used by locals and their pets, adding to concerns about public safety.
Immediate Response from Authorities
In response to the incident, rangers from the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation visited the location on Thursday afternoon. They erected signs warning residents of the recent crocodile sighting and the potential danger in the area. A spokesman for the department stated that investigations are ongoing to determine if further action, such as crocodile removal or additional safety measures, is necessary.
This event highlights the ongoing risks associated with crocodile habitats in Far North Queensland and serves as a stark reminder for people to remain vigilant near waterways. Residents are urged to avoid swimming in or allowing pets near creeks and rivers known to be crocodile territory, especially in light of this recent attack.
