Massive Swells and Gale-Force Winds Pose Severe Threat to Illawarra Coastline
Extremely perilous ocean conditions are anticipated to impact the Illawarra region this week, with authorities issuing urgent warnings for the public to steer clear of coastal areas. Forecasts predict gale-force winds will batter the area on Thursday and Friday, accompanied by a hazardous surf warning that highlights the imminent danger.
Forecast Details and Safety Alerts
A significant swell, potentially reaching heights of up to eight meters, is expected to affect the Illawarra, Sydney, and Batemans coasts. Meanwhile, the Eden Coast may experience swells ranging from four to six meters. Marine Rescue NSW acting Deputy Commissioner Dan Duemmer emphasized that these conditions are set to intensify from Friday, creating an environment that is incredibly dangerous for any maritime activities.
In a stern advisory, Mr. Duemmer stated, "It is going to be incredibly dangerous on the ocean. Please heed the warnings and don't endanger yourself or others by hitting the water. Now is not the time to go boating. The forecast winds and swell will make boating hazardous, don't risk it. No recreational trip is worth risking your life." He further urged individuals to remain off the water and avoid proximity to its edge, particularly highlighting the risks for rock fishers.
Specific Risks and Precautionary Measures
Rock fishing, already considered a high-risk activity, is deemed an absolute no-go under the predicted conditions. Mr. Duemmer cautioned, "We have seen far too many rock fishers lose their lives recently. Rock fishing is a high-risk coastal activity even in favourable weather; with the forecast conditions over the next few days, it is an absolute no-go. People should also avoid walking near rock ledges exposed to the full force of the ocean."
For boaters, securing vessels with appropriate mooring or anchoring arrangements is recommended, provided it can be done safely. Once conditions improve, boaters and anglers are encouraged to consistently check weather forecasts before venturing out. In case of emergencies, individuals should contact Marine Rescue NSW on VHF Channel 16 or call triple zero for life-threatening situations.
Comprehensive Safety Guidelines
- Stay out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas to prevent accidents.
- Rock fishers should seek sheltered locations away from coastal rock platforms exposed to ocean surges.
- Boaters planning to cross shallow water or ocean bars should consider postponing or altering their voyages.
- Those already on the water must carry appropriate safety equipment and wear lifejackets at all times.
- Boaters should log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue app and review their safety management plans.
This severe weather event underscores the importance of heeding official warnings to ensure public safety along the Illawarra coastline.
