Cyclone Alert: Cocos Islands Brace for 'Dangerous' Tropical Low and 100km/h Winds
Cyclone Advice issued for Cocos Islands as tropical low nears

A severe weather warning has been activated for the remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands, with authorities urging the community to prepare for a dangerous tropical low expected to hit this evening.

Damaging Winds and Heavy Rain Forecast

According to Emergency WA, the developing system is predicted to bring gales and damaging wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour. These conditions may start developing from the morning of Monday, January 5, 2026.

While the tropical low is currently tracking south and should pass just to the east of the island chain, gales are considered likely on the eastern side. There is a strong possibility that these damaging winds will extend to the western side by evening as the low intensifies.

Final Call for Preparation

Emergency services have issued a clear directive, stating that now is the final chance for residents to complete their preparations. This includes finalising emergency kits, securing residential cyclone plans, and readying properties for potential flash flooding from major rainfall.

All local businesses and shops on the islands have been advised that they will be closed if the situation escalates to a higher-level Watch and Act alert.

What Residents Must Do Now

Emergency WA has provided a critical checklist for island residents:

  • Stay informed via the Emergency WA app and website, and listen to Radio 6CKI for updates.
  • Review your household cyclone plan with all members.
  • Locate your emergency kit. If relocating, pack extra items, insert batteries into your radio, and test it.
  • Secure all loose items outdoors, including boats, trailers, outdoor furniture, loose building materials, LPG bottles, and rubbish bins.
  • Check on friends and neighbours to ensure they are also preparing.
  • Understand the different cyclone warning levels and the required actions for each.

For comprehensive preparation information, residents are directed to visit the official emergency.wa.gov.au/prepare website.
