Cyclone Alert: Category Two Storm 08U Targets WA's Kimberley Coast
Cyclone 08U to hit Kimberley Coast as Category Two storm

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a critical warning for communities along Western Australia's Kimberley coastline, with a developing tropical system poised to intensify into a significant cyclone.

Storm Path and Intensity Forecast

Tropical Low 08U, currently situated approximately 620 kilometres north-west of Broome, is tracking southwards. The system is expected to turn towards the coast from Monday afternoon. Meteorologists predict it will intensify into a category two cyclone at its peak by early Tuesday morning.

The cyclone is forecast to make landfall in the early hours of Wednesday, likely weakening to a category one system as it crosses the coast. The primary threat window for the most severe conditions is throughout Tuesday.

Immediate Threats to the Region

The Bureau warns the system will bring multiple hazards. Damaging wind gusts reaching up to 90 km/h are possible across the watch area on Tuesday. There is a heightened risk of destructive wind gusts along the coastal fringe north of Broome to Cape Leveque late Tuesday, particularly if the cyclone moves faster than predicted.

Residents are also being warned of widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding from Tuesday. Abnormally high tides are expected as the system approaches the west Kimberley Coast, exacerbating coastal impacts.

Emergency Services Urge Immediate Preparation

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) activated an advice warning on Sunday afternoon for residents from Broome to Cockatoo Island. Authorities stress that while there is no immediate danger, preparation must begin now.

The DFES warning outlines clear steps for residents:

  • Review your cyclone plan and ensure your home is maintained. If you don't have a plan, create one immediately via the Emergency WA website or app.
  • Check your emergency kit contains essential items, including a battery-powered AM/FM radio and a first aid kit.
  • Ensure all household members understand the cyclone warning system and the actions required for each alert level.

The key message from officials is for communities to stay informed through official channels and not to underestimate the potential severity of this developing weather system.
