Fishermen Survive Terrifying Encounter with Massive Great White Shark Off South Australia Coast
Two fishermen from Victoria have survived a heart-stopping close encounter with one of the ocean's most formidable predators when a massive great white shark began aggressively circling their small tinny boat off the coast of South Australia. The dramatic incident occurred during the Easter long weekend, sending shockwaves through the local fishing community and capturing widespread attention on social media platforms.
The Sudden and Eerie Discovery
Victorian anglers James Harris and Fraser Bothe were among a group of friends enjoying a fishing expedition approximately two kilometers off the picturesque Robe Island when they noticed something deeply unsettling. A flock of birds that had been hovering around their boat suddenly scattered and flew away in a panic, alerting the fishermen to potential danger lurking beneath the surface.
Harris immediately grabbed his smartphone and began recording as a colossal great white shark emerged from the depths, starting to circle their vulnerable vessel. In the tense footage, one of the fishermen can be heard exclaiming with palpable fear, "That is f****** huge", followed by the urgent warning, "It's coming towards us." The group wasted no time in aborting their fishing trip and racing back to the safety of the shore.
Recounting the Harrowing Ordeal
Speaking to Sunrise in the aftermath of the terrifying experience, Harris described the mixed emotions of the encounter. "It was quite scary but pretty cool," he admitted, adding, "It was a bit of a shock. There would have been like six or seven birds ... around the boat ... and they all just flew off and the next minute we just saw this big dorsal fin."
Harris emphasized that the sheer size of the shark was not fully captured in the video footage. "It was quite big, the video doesn't do it justice but we got the video then got out of there pretty quick," he explained. The great white reportedly circled the boat two to three times, creating an atmosphere of intense suspense and danger for everyone on board.
Estimating the Shark's Monumental Size
Fraser Bothe, who was operating the boat during the encounter, provided a startling estimation of the shark's dimensions. He believes the great white was close to five meters in length, significantly longer than their 4.5-meter vessel. "This boat is 4.5m-long and when it came up beside it, it was longer than (the boat)," Bothe recounted, highlighting the predator's intimidating presence.
While Bothe was focused on getting away from the shark as rapidly as possible, Harris confessed to a conflicting desire to observe the magnificent creature more closely. "I wanted to stay and take a few more videos but this bloke here (Bothe), he turned the key and got out of there pretty quick," Harris revealed, illustrating the different reactions to the perilous situation.
Additional Shark Encounters During the Long Weekend
This frightening incident was not the only shark encounter reported in South Australia over the Easter long weekend. In a separate event at Middleton, a 16-year-old boy narrowly escaped serious injury when a suspected bronze whaler shark clamped down on his ankle while he was surfing. The attack knocked the teenager off his board, but he managed to paddle back to shore and seek help. Fortunately, his injuries were not considered life-threatening, though the experience undoubtedly left a lasting impression.
