A major safety upgrade is set to begin on a busy Illawarra road, more than three years after a tragic pedestrian death. Transport for NSW will install a new pedestrian refuge on the Illawarra Highway at Albion Park, directly addressing community safety concerns.
Addressing a Tragic Legacy
The upgrade location is highly significant. The new refuge will be built 190 metres west of the Hamilton Street intersection, the exact spot where a 73-year-old man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in 2022. The project aims to prevent future tragedies on this 50km/h stretch, which sees high foot traffic from people accessing local businesses, the bowling club, and residential areas.
Cassandra Ffrench, Transport for NSW Executive Director for Partnerships and Integration South, emphasised the upgrade's purpose. "By installing a formal crossing and refuge we are giving pedestrians more time to cross the road, and protection at the refuge point in the middle," Ms Ffrench said. The work will formally define a crossing point where pedestrians currently navigate a wide and busy section of highway.
Scope of Works and Timeline
The construction involves building a kerb and concrete island in the centre of the highway. Additional improvements include upgraded street lighting, new line markings, and new signs to alert motorists.
Work is scheduled to commence on Monday, January 27, 2026, and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. To minimise disruption, most activities will occur during daytime hours between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm. Some necessary night work will also take place between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am.
Traffic Changes and Disruptions
Motorists are advised to plan for changes during the construction period. The following traffic controls will be in place:
- Single-lane closures during work hours.
- A reduced speed limit of 40km/h through the site.
- Changes to on-street parking along the highway.
- Temporary relocation of a bus stop on Tongarra Road, which will be moved 50 metres west until works finish.
This infrastructure investment by Transport for NSW responds directly to local need, aiming to create a safer environment for all road users in Albion Park. The project underscores an ongoing commitment to improving pedestrian safety across the Illawarra region following serious incidents.
