Perth Urgently Needs Volunteers to Board Seeing Eye Dogs
Volunteer Homes Needed for Seeing Eye Dogs in Perth

Perth residents are being urged to open their hearts and homes to a special kind of canine guest in the coming months. Vision Australia's Seeing Eye Dogs program has issued a call for volunteers to join its vital boarding and relief care network.

What Does a Boarding Carer Do?

The program is seeking individuals to provide temporary homes for fully trained Seeing Eye Dogs when their handlers are unable to care for them. This can occur due to travel, hospital stays, or other personal circumstances. Matt Wood, a mobility instructor with Seeing Eye Dogs, emphasised that these volunteers play a crucial role in supporting people who are blind or have low vision.

"Our volunteers are integral to what we do," Mr Wood said. He explained that not only do carers get the joy of hosting a loving and well-trained dog, but they also gain the satisfaction of directly helping someone maintain their independence.

Support and Requirements for Volunteers

Vision Australia ensures that the commitment is not a financial burden on volunteers. The national provider covers all associated expenses, including food, medication, and any necessary equipment. They also offer ongoing support and professional training to all carers.

The care periods are short-term and depend entirely on the handler's needs, involving dogs that have already graduated and are actively working. Prospective volunteers must meet several key requirements:

  • Provide safe, secure housing with indoor sleeping space for a large dog.
  • Be physically capable of caring for a big dog.
  • Follow all care and training instructions from the Seeing Eye Dogs team.
  • Hold an active driver's licence and have access to a vehicle to transport the dog.

A Rewarding Opportunity to Give Back

"If you love dogs and are looking to give back to the community, then volunteering as a relief or boarding carer could be for you," Mr Wood stated. The role offers a unique way to make a tangible difference, providing stability for both a highly skilled working dog and its handler during necessary breaks.

This call for volunteers was highlighted on 22 December 2025. Those interested in applying for this rewarding volunteer position are encouraged to visit the Vision Australia website for more information and to begin the application process.
