A 12-year-old girl has been hospitalised following an alleged stabbing at a busy public transport hub in Adelaide's north on New Year's Eve, with three teenage girls now facing serious charges.
Altercation at Transport Hub
South Australia Police were called to the Salisbury Interchange just before 7:00 pm on December 31 following reports of an altercation. Upon arrival, emergency services discovered the young victim with a single stab wound to her abdomen.
Paramedics treated the girl at the scene before transporting her to hospital. Authorities have confirmed her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Swift Arrests and Charges
The alleged offenders initially fled the scene aboard a train. However, in a rapid police response, three teenage girls were arrested minutes later at the Mawson Lakes Interchange.
The trio, all known to each other according to police, have been charged. They are:
- A 15-year-old from Davoren Park
- A 15-year-old from Pooraka
- A 14-year-old from Craigmore
All three face charges of affray and aggravated assault. Police allege the 15-year-old from Davoren Park was responsible for the stabbing and she faces an additional, more serious charge of assault causing harm.
Court Proceedings and Public Assurance
All three accused were refused bail and are expected to appear before the Elizabeth Youth Court this week. The court has also issued transit barring orders against them.
Investigators have stressed that all those involved were known to each other and that there is no ongoing risk to the general public. They have urged anyone who witnessed the incident at the Salisbury Interchange to come forward and contact police.
The incident has raised concerns about safety at public transport interchanges, particularly on a major evening like New Year's Eve when larger crowds are present.
