Two teenage girls have been released without charge after being arrested by Victoria Police investigating a beachfront assault in Melbourne's southeast that left a younger girl injured.
Alleged Assault Near Mordialloc Pier
According to police, the incident occurred on December 17 near the toilet block close to Mordialloc Pier. A 13-year-old girl was allegedly approached by two other girls before being assaulted, sustaining minor injuries.
The situation was brought to an end when a man, believed to be aged in his 50s or 60s, intervened to stop the attack. Victoria Police have publicly appealed for this man, or anyone else who witnessed the event or has relevant footage, to come forward to assist their ongoing investigation.
Arrests and Release Pending Further Inquiries
On Friday, December 26, 2025, police announced they had arrested and interviewed two 15-year-old girls in relation to the alleged assault. Both were subsequently released pending further inquiries, meaning no charges have been laid at this stage.
Authorities have been careful to distinguish this specific assault from a separate, larger outbreak of violence that occurred on the Mordialloc foreshore later the same day.
Unrelated Outburst of Foreshore Violence
In a separate and unrelated incident also on December 17, dozens of young people were involved in disruptive and violent behaviour. Shocking social media footage showed a large group swarming a Woolworths supermarket on Main Street in Mordialloc, damaging stock and causing alarm among staff and shoppers.
The disturbance later escalated to the beach, where some individuals clashed with police officers who responded to the scene.
Kingston City Council Mayor Georgina Oxley strongly condemned the "anti-social and dangerous behaviour." In a statement, she expressed sympathy for the Woolworths staff, customers, and members of the public caught up in the "frightening and distressing situation."
"No one should feel unsafe while going about their day, whether at work, shopping locally or relaxing by the water," Mayor Oxley said. She thanked Victoria Police for their swift response and confirmed the council's ongoing work with police to support community safety during the busy summer period.
Victoria Police continue their probe into the initial assault and urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
