Victoria Police have arrested two teenage girls following an alleged assault on a younger girl at a popular beach in Melbourne's southeast last month.
Alleged Assault Near the Pier
The incident occurred at Mordialloc Beach around 1:30pm on Sunday, December 17. According to police, a 13-year-old girl was approached by two 15-year-old girls near a toilet block close to the Mordialloc Pier.
It is alleged the younger teenager was assaulted during the confrontation. The situation was interrupted when a man, believed to be aged between 50 and 60 years old, stepped in to intervene.
The two older girls then reportedly fled the scene, leaving the 13-year-old with what police described as minor injuries.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Following an investigation, officers from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit arrested the two 15-year-old girls, both from the Casey area, on Friday.
Both teenagers were interviewed by police before being released pending further inquiries. The investigation remains ongoing.
Investigators are now appealing to the public for assistance. They are keen to speak with any witnesses to the alleged assault and are particularly interested in locating the man who intervened.
Police have also asked anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV footage from the Mordialloc Beach and pier area around the time of the incident to come forward.
A Day of Chaos at Mordialloc
The alleged assault was not the only major incident to disrupt the beachside suburb that day. In a separate event, hundreds of teenagers gathered at Mordialloc Pier, leading to significant unrest.
The large group first stormed a nearby Woolworths supermarket before moving to the pier area, where a large brawl erupted. The situation escalated to the point where the teenagers turned on responding police officers, throwing bottles and other objects.
The disturbance was so severe that the Police Air Wing was deployed to monitor the chaos from above, and the specialist riot squad was called in to help restore order.
At this stage, police have not confirmed if the alleged assault and the mass brawl are linked. Investigations into both incidents continue.
