Chaos broke out at a major Western Sydney shopping centre on Saturday afternoon following a violent altercation that left a man with a stab wound.
Violent Altercation in Busy Shopping Precinct
Emergency services rushed to Bankstown Central on North Terrace shortly after 2:30pm on Saturday following reports of an assault. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered a 55-year-old man suffering from a single stab wound to his upper body.
The victim received immediate treatment at the scene before being transported to hospital. Authorities have confirmed his condition is stable and the injury is not considered life-threatening.
Arrest and Charges Laid
A short time after the incident, police arrested a 27-year-old man near the shopping centre. He has since been formally charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and custody of a knife in a public place.
The accused was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
Shoppers and Store Owners Left in Shock
The incident, which occurred during a busy weekend shopping period, has deeply unsettled the local community. Video footage from inside the centre shows three men engaged in a heated argument moments before the alleged stabbing, with numerous shoppers looking on.
Eddie Liu, a store owner within Bankstown Central who witnessed the event, expressed his disbelief to 7NEWS. "It's pretty crazy that something like that would happen in a shopping centre," he said, echoing the shock felt by many present.
The investigation is ongoing, with police likely reviewing CCTV and speaking to other witnesses who were at the scene during the chaotic Saturday afternoon.
