How to Give Back in the Illawarra This Christmas: Hampers, Lunches & Giving Trees
Spread Festive Cheer: Ways to Help in the Illawarra

As the festive season approaches, the spirit of giving takes centre stage across the Illawarra. For many residents, Christmas is a time of celebration, but for others, it can be a period of significant hardship. Fortunately, the local community has rallied with several initiatives designed to offer support and spread joy to those doing it tough.

Community Hampers and Essential Support

Local organisations are reporting a surge in demand for assistance this year. The Warrawong Residents Forum (WRF) is a prime example, aiming to assemble and deliver 200 Christmas hampers and gifts to families and children. The group has noted this year's call for help is the highest they have experienced.

Donations of non-perishable food, gifts (with a particular need for items suitable for teenagers), and financial contributions are urgently needed. The hamper packing will commence on Monday, December 9. Those wishing to contribute can visit wrf.org.au/donate or contact the forum via email.

Meanwhile, the St Vincent de Paul Society's annual Christmas appeal is in full swing throughout December. Volunteers are busy collecting and distributing hampers across the region. Several specific collection points have been organised, including a drive with the Oak Flats Rural Fire Brigade at the Vinnies shop in Oak Flats on Saturday, December 6, from 2pm to 4pm.

Festive Feasts and Community Connection

For many, Christmas Day is about companionship as much as it is about a meal. Lifeline South Coast will once again host its free community Christmas lunch, open to anyone seeking festive fare and company. This vital service offers more than just a hot meal; it often serves as a crucial first step for individuals to access further support.

The organisation encourages the public to 'donate a plate' to help fund the event and sustain its community kitchen operations over the holiday period. Contributions can be made directly through their dedicated online fundraising page.

Giving Trees: A Gift for Every Child

Several local councils have established Giving Trees to ensure no child goes without a present this Christmas. These campaigns are in their final days, so prompt action is needed.

Shellharbour City Council's Mayoress' Giving Tree concludes its gift collection on the afternoon of Friday, December 5. All donated items will be passed to St Vincent de Paul for distribution. In Kiama, the Mayor's Giving Trees will accept new, unwrapped gifts for children up to 14 years until Friday, December 12. Trees are located at the council administration building, local libraries, and The Pavilion.

The City of Wollongong's Giving Tree, run in partnership with Anglicare and St Vincent de Paul, is collecting presents for children up to 16 years until Sunday, December 14. A wide network of drop-off points has been established, including most local libraries, council customer service, and major shopping centres like Crown Street Mall, Dapto Mall, Figtree Grove, and Warrawong Plaza.

Nationally, Kmart's Wishing Tree Appeal is also accepting unwrapped gifts at any store until December 24, providing another accessible option for those wanting to contribute.

Making a Collective Difference

The array of initiatives highlights the strong community fabric of the Illawarra region. From financial donations and food items to unwrapped toys and books, every contribution, large or small, helps alleviate pressure on individuals and families during what should be a joyful time. By supporting these local charities and drives, residents can truly embody the festive spirit of generosity and ensure that the warmth of Christmas is shared throughout the entire community.
