Police in Newcastle have launched an investigation following the distribution of what authorities are describing as racist flyers in several inner-city suburbs.
Flyers Contain White Nationalist Messaging
The offensive material was deposited into residential letterboxes in the Cooks Hill area and surrounding neighbourhoods. The Newcastle Herald has confirmed the flyers promote white nationalist ideology, but has chosen not to republish the specific details or imagery contained within them.
Local law enforcement was alerted to the incident and has commenced formal inquiries. Newcastle City Police District is actively following leads and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Community and Political Leaders Condemn Act
Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp has been briefed on the situation and issued a strong statement condemning the distribution. He provided direct contact numbers for reporting.
"NSW Police have been informed of a racist flyer that has been dropped in letterboxes across Newcastle," Mr Crakanthorp said. "Racism and hate speech will not be tolerated in our community."
He encouraged residents who received a flyer to report it immediately to the Newcastle City Police District on 0473 847 932 or to Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
Incident Overshadows New Year's Eve Security Plans
The investigation comes as NSW Police prepared for major New Year's Eve celebrations across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Port Stephens on December 31. Officers were expecting large crowds at community events to ring in 2026.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon indicated that a visible police presence would be in place at events statewide, including in Newcastle. This follows a broader strategy to reassure communities after the Bondi attack earlier in the year.
Support services are available for anyone distressed by this incident, including Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), and 13 YARN (13 92 76).
