Perth Swimathon to Raise Funds for Lifesaving Swimming Lessons

A major community swimathon event, designed to enhance water safety for vulnerable populations, is scheduled to take place in Perth's eastern suburbs in early May. The BlueFit Foundation is organizing Waves of Change at Belmont Oasis on Sunday, May 3, bringing together families, schools, workplaces, and community groups for an afternoon of fundraising and family-friendly activities.

Event Details and Inclusive Participation

The event will feature a swimathon alongside a variety of inclusive activities to broaden participation. Funds raised will support the BlueFit Foundation's programs, which focus on teaching swimming and water safety skills to individuals facing financial or social barriers to lessons. According to the foundation, drowning remains a significant risk among vulnerable groups, particularly those without access to formal swimming education, and this initiative aims to address that critical gap.

The day will commence at 1pm with an Hour of Power aquarobics session, tailored to accommodate a wide range of fitness levels. Participants can join by making a donation, providing an alternative for those who prefer not to swim laps.

Three-Hour Lap Challenge and Community Engagement

From 2pm to 5pm, teams will engage in a three-hour lap challenge, striving to swim as many laps as possible while raising funds. Casual swimmers can also contribute, with entry fees from a dedicated community lap lane going directly to the BlueFit Foundation. The afternoon will include poolside entertainment such as music, a photo station, a sausage sizzle, and activities for children, fostering a festival-like atmosphere for all attendees.

BlueFit Foundation spokesperson Karyn Clancy emphasized the importance of community-driven action, stating, "Waves of Change is a celebration of community coming together for a purpose. Learning to swim is not a luxury; it is a life-saving skill. Through this swimathon, we aim to ensure that those most at risk are given the opportunity to gain confidence in the water and develop skills that may one day save their lives."
