Got Your Back Sista Celebrates 10-Year Milestone

Got Your Back Sista Celebrates a Decade of Transformative Support

A decade of dedicated service and profound impact was celebrated on Thursday night as the domestic violence charity Got Your Back Sista marked its 10-year anniversary. Founded by Melissa Histon-Browning, the organisation has evolved from a small, home-based initiative into a crucial front-line service, providing essential support to women and children escaping domestic violence across the Hunter region.

Over 5000 Lives Transformed Through Compassionate Care

Since its launch in 2016, Got Your Back Sista has supported more than 5000 women through comprehensive casework, crisis accommodation, food relief, and empowerment programs. Ms Histon-Browning expressed immense pride in the charity's growth, highlighting its role in helping survivors rebuild their lives.

"Through our one-on-one casework support and recovery programs, we've walked alongside women as they rebuild their safety, confidence, and independence," she said. "I'm incredibly proud of the dedicated team that has grown around this mission, professionals who show up every day with compassion, skill, and unwavering commitment."

Personal Stories of Resilience and Renewal

The anniversary celebration brought together supporters, volunteers, and clients whose lives have been profoundly changed by the organisation's work. Frankie Grandelis, a client, shared her gratitude for the support received.

"Through the various workshops and training courses I attended, I gained not only practical skills but also confidence and a renewed sense of direction," she said. "Each session was thoughtfully delivered and genuinely empowering."

A Community Refusing to Look Away

Founding board member Belinda Wellings reflected on the milestone as a powerful testament to community resilience and action. "Ten years ago, we set out to create a place where women escaping domestic violence could feel seen and supported," she said. "A decade on, this milestone reflects the courage of the women we serve and a community that refuses to look away."

How You Can Support the Mission

For those inspired to contribute, Got Your Back Sista offers multiple avenues for support:

  • Donate canned goods to support the open pantry initiative.
  • Attend fundraising events to help raise crucial funds.
  • Make a direct financial donation to sustain ongoing services.
