Focus ACT Enhances Community Integration for Disability Support Participants

For individuals living with disabilities, daily life can often feel like navigating an elevated level of difficulty compared to others. While some face minor challenges, others encounter obstacles that seem insurmountable, particularly in completing routine tasks such as shopping, cooking, or cleaning. In Canberra, many residents with disabilities require varying levels of assistance, from simple lifts to the shops to comprehensive support with budgeting and household management.

Empowering Independence Through Active Support

Focus ACT, a not-for-profit organization serving the Canberra region for over 35 years, has dedicated itself to helping participants achieve their personal goals and live independently. CEO Ken Wedgwood, who also serves as a guardian for his younger brother, emphasizes that the organization places participants at the forefront of their own support plans.

"We support people to live their lives," Wedgwood stated. "We don't make decisions on behalf of people. We encourage them to come into the community, from social events to everyday activities like going to the shops."

He described the approach as active support, which involves encouraging individuals to take risks and try new things rather than merely providing care. "It's not sitting and caring for somebody; it's actively encouraging them to take risks and try new things," Wedgwood explained.

Building a Visible Community Presence

Despite operating since the late 1980s, Focus ACT has maintained a relatively low profile in Canberra. Wedgwood acknowledged this, saying, "We have not been a loud part of the Canberra community. We've just quietly been ticking away in the background." However, the organization is now actively working to increase its visibility through initiatives such as new uniforms and greater community engagement.

To further strengthen its community connections, Focus ACT has partnered with the Canberra Raiders for the 50/50 charity raffle at their home game against the Melbourne Storm on Friday, April 17, 2026. "We're pretty excited about that," Wedgwood remarked. "We will have some clients there. So if anyone wants to come down and buy a ticket in the 50/50 Raffle to support us, we'd love to see you." This initiative also benefits other charities, including the Heart Foundation and the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation.

Fostering Independent Living Through Personalized Support

Wedgwood reinforced that the core mission of Focus ACT is to help people live independently, which often requires addressing multiple aspects of daily life. "We have situations where a person can absolutely work, but we've got to figure out how they will get to work, how they pack their lunch, what work they're going to do, who they're going to work with, and what supports they need to attend that workplace," he said.

He concluded with a powerful statement: "It really is about getting people to live their life rather than be tucked away in the background." This philosophy underscores Focus ACT's commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities to participate fully in community life, ensuring they are seen and supported in their pursuit of independence.
