Lachlan Kennedy Withdraws from 200m Event at Australian Athletics Championship
Lachlan Kennedy has officially pulled out of the 200m race at the Australian Athletics Championship, putting his highly anticipated rivalry with teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout on hold. This decision comes just a day after Kennedy clocked an impressive 9.96 seconds to secure his first national 100m title at Sydney Olympic Park.
Historic Performance in the 100m
Kennedy's victory in the 100m was a landmark achievement, marking the second time in as many days that he legally broke the 10-second barrier, having also run 9.96 seconds in his heat. At 22 years old, he has become the first Australian to accomplish this feat on home soil. The national record-holder, Patrick Johnson, previously ran 9.93 seconds in Mito, Japan, back in 2003.
After the race, Kennedy expressed doubts about competing in the 200m, citing fatigue. "Hard to say ... have to see what the coach and physio say. We'll see how I feel and how I pull up," he remarked. "Tonight I'm going to celebrate and we'll see how the body pulls up tomorrow."
Rivalry with Gout Gout Delayed
Gout Gout, an 18-year-old rising star, will now have to wait for another opportunity to improve his score against Kennedy, who has won their past two meetings. Kennedy recently edged out Gout to achieve a 100m-200m double for the second consecutive year at last month's Maurie Plant Meet.
Commenting on Kennedy's performance, broadcasting legend Bruce McAvaney said, "It is spectacular. He's a star." Despite a slow start out of the blocks, Kennedy dominated the race, easily beating competitors Josh Azzopardi (10.16 seconds) and Rohan Browning (10.19 seconds).
Sprinting great and Sunrise host Matt Shirvington added, "We've just seen another evolution in his racing, he didn't get out of blocks that well, but that flawless technique got him to the line."
Kennedy's Relief and Future Plans
Speaking after his 100m win, Kennedy shared his relief at finally claiming the national title. "It's such a relief to finally be able to say I'm a national champion," he told Channel 7. "I feel like I should have had it last year, but didn't have my best race. Was able to come here and handle business and run a pretty good time while I'm at it."
Other Highlights from the Championship
In other news from the event, middle-distance star Jessica Hull is expected to compete in Sunday's 5000m after withdrawing from the 800m due to soreness. Hull recently lost her 1500m title to Claudia Hollingsworth after tripping during a challenge from the 20-year-old rising star.
Additionally, Peter Bol will race for his fifth 800m title later on Sunday, with high jump ace Nicola Olyslagers and pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall also set to be in action.
