Cairns Hospital's Special Care Nursery to be transformed by Christmas gift wrap fundraiser
Christmas wrap fundraiser to transform Cairns Hospital nursery

A heartwarming Christmas initiative at a popular Cairns shopping centre is set to make a significant difference for the region's tiniest and most vulnerable patients. The annual gift wrapping fundraiser at Cairns Central is dedicating its proceeds to a major upgrade of the Special Care Nursery at Cairns Hospital.

Festive Spirit Fuels Vital Hospital Upgrade

For the entire month of December, shoppers at Cairns Central can have their presents professionally wrapped for a gold coin donation. Every cent raised will be channelled directly to the Far North Queensland Health Foundation. The funds are earmarked for a critical transformation of the hospital's Special Care Nursery, which cares for premature and sick newborns.

The nursery's manager, Lizzie Gub, expressed profound gratitude for the community's support. She emphasised that the upgraded facilities will profoundly impact families during an incredibly stressful time. "When you have a baby in special care, it's one of the most traumatic experiences a family can go through," Ms Gub explained. The planned enhancements aim to create a more comfortable and supportive environment for both infants and their parents.

Creating a Home-Like Haven for Families

The fundraising goal is focused on purchasing specialised, multi-functional parent beds. These are not ordinary hospital beds. They are designed to allow parents to sleep comfortably right beside their baby's humidicrib, enabling crucial skin-to-skin contact and facilitating bonding during those vital first days and weeks.

"The beds we are hoping to purchase through this fundraiser allow the parent to sleep safely and comfortably right next to their baby," Ms Gub said. This simple yet powerful change can significantly reduce parental anxiety and improve outcomes for the newborn. The initiative directly addresses the need for family-integrated care, recognising that parental presence is a powerful medicine.

Community Partnership Wraps Up Support

This marks the second consecutive year that Cairns Central has partnered with the Far North Queensland Health Foundation for its Christmas gift wrap service. The centre's management highlighted the alignment of the festive season of giving with the opportunity to support a local cause that touches so many lives.

Shoppers can access the gift wrap station, staffed by dedicated volunteers and foundation personnel, near the Christmas tree in the centre's mall area. The service will run throughout December, offering a convenient way for the community to contribute to a lasting legacy at their local hospital while ticking off their holiday to-do list.

The Far North Queensland Health Foundation continues to be the primary channel for charitable donations aimed at enhancing healthcare services across the region. This fundraiser exemplifies how community spirit and a simple festive service can collectively fund important medical equipment, directly benefiting Cairns' youngest and most fragile residents and their families for years to come.
