More than 240 people facing homelessness and hardship across Newcastle have gathered for a special Christmas celebration, sharing a festive meal and camaraderie at the annual Soul Hub Christmas party.
A Day of Festive Connection and Reunion
The event, held at NEX on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, brought together guests of honour with approximately 60 dedicated volunteers. The atmosphere was filled with shared stories, gift-giving, and a strong sense of Christmas gratitude. For many attendees, this invitation was the only one they received all year, making the occasion profoundly significant.
For two attendees, Barbara Siu and volunteer Susie Stephens, the day marked a heartwarming reunion. Ms Stephens, one of Soul Hub's longest-serving volunteers with over eight years at the Christmas event, was reunited with Ms Siu last year. "We went to school together in Coogee and we both worked in the entertainment industry on TV and in music," Ms Stephens explained.
Ms Siu, who attended dressed as 'Santa-ette', declared it the best party in town. "I went last year and I have been looking forward all year to come out again," she said. Ms Stephens added that the event was a chance to see familiar faces, with everyone looking forward to the annual gathering.
Community and Corporate Support Makes it Possible
Soul Hub's General Manager, Matthew Ortiger, emphasised the importance of the day. "Christmas can be a very hard time for people facing homelessness or hardship," Mr Ortiger stated. "Our Christmas party creates a moment where our guests and volunteers can sit together, share a meal, and feel part of a community that cares for them."
He highlighted that the event actively combats social isolation, providing a comfortable space for the community's most vulnerable to connect. The success of the 2025 celebration relied on strong local support:
- The venue and services were provided by longstanding partners NEX and The Wests Group.
- Newcastle Limousines covered the cost of the traditional baked Christmas lunch.
- Port Waratah Coal Services contributed towards drinks and live music.
The festive menu featured classic Australian Christmas staples, with pavlova and Christmas pudding following the main meal.
Gifts of Generosity and Hope
Beyond the feast, community generosity ensured guests received tangible gifts of hope. Hundreds of 'Hampers of Hope', donated through Soul Hub's Christmas Appeal by individuals, families, and businesses, were distributed. These were filled with essential staples and seasonal treats.
Additional gifts included:
- Toiletry buckets packed by Kiwanis.
- Handbags supplied through the Share the Dignity 'It's in the Bag' campaign.
- Prewrapped children's gifts donated by Life Church Newcastle.
The day ultimately provided much more than a meal; it offered live music, vital human connection, and a powerful reminder that the Newcastle community stands together, especially during the festive season.
