Bondi hero gets $2.5M cheque in hospital

The man who bravely tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the Bondi terror attack has been presented with a staggering $2.5 million cheque while recovering in his hospital bed.

A Heroic Act Captured on Video

Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old shop owner from Sutherland Shire, became a global symbol of courage after his actions last Sunday. Incredible footage shows the father-of-two crouching behind a vehicle before launching himself at the attacker. He managed to wrestle the rifle away from the gunman and even pointed the weapon back at him.

During the confrontation and ensuing gunfire, Ahmed was shot twice in the arm. He was rushed to St George Hospital, where he continues to receive treatment for his injuries.

An Overwhelming Global Response

Video of Ahmed's selfless bravery spread rapidly across social media, turning him into a household name. In response, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support the hero and his family.

The fundraiser achieved an astonishing result, collecting over $2.5 million in just four days. The donations came from more than 43,000 people around the world, moved by his story.

On Thursday, philanthropist and social media influencer Zachery Dereniowski visited Ahmed in hospital to deliver the news. Dereniowski, known online as mdmotivator, presented Ahmed with a ceremonial cheque for the full amount.

"I came here with news of people around the world, 43,000 people. They raised you $2.5 million dollars," Dereniowski told Ahmed in a video posted to social media. When Ahmed humbly asked, "I deserve it?" Dereniowski firmly replied, "Every penny."

Messages of Gratitude and Support

When asked what he would say to the thousands who donated, Ahmed emphasised unity and the right to peace. "It was a nice day, everyone enjoying celebrating, with their kids. Woman, man, teenager, all this, everyone was happy," he reflected. "They deserve to enjoy, and it’s their right."

Dereniowski, a Canadian with millions of followers on TikTok and Instagram, has a personal connection to Sydney, having studied medicine there for two years. He said the city holds a special place in his heart. Following the meeting, he posted online, "Ahmed, the world loves you."

Ahmed has also received visits from the nation's highest leaders. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns both met with him in hospital to offer their thanks and support.

In a statement on social media platform X, Prime Minister Albanese wrote, "Ahmed, you are an Australian hero. You put yourself at risk to save others, running towards danger on Bondi Beach and disarming a terrorist. In the worst of times, we see the best of Australians."

The Prime Minister's words captured the national sentiment, highlighting how Ahmed's actions amidst tragedy have inspired a nation and the world.
