Elderly Man Attacked in Gwynneville Street

A 58-year-old man has been hospitalised following a violent assault in the Illawarra suburb of Gwynneville on a Monday evening. The incident occurred on October 20 at approximately 7:45 PM while the victim was walking along Vickery Street.

Details of the Violent Confrontation

The man was walking north along the eastern side of Vickery Street, near the popular Wiseman Park Reserve, when he stopped to converse with a group of women inside a stationary silver utility vehicle and two men standing nearby. Without warning, the situation turned violent.

One of the men standing next to the vehicle allegedly punched the 58-year-old, causing him to collapse to the ground. The attacker then proceeded to kick him while he was defenceless on the roadside.

Following the assault, two other vehicles arrived at the scene. The two men who had been standing near the ute subsequently left in one of these newly arrived vehicles, fleeing before authorities could arrive.

Police Investigation and Appeal for Information

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to Vickery Street after receiving reports of the attack. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the victim for injuries to his eye, back, elbow, and ankle before transporting him to Wollongong Hospital for further medical care.

Wollongong Police District has launched an investigation and is seeking to identify a person of interest described as a Caucasian man with a large build who was wearing a light-coloured shirt and shorts at the time of the incident.

Police are urging anyone with information, particularly those with dashcam footage or CCTV from the Vickery Street area around the time of the assault, to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in information about the silver utility vehicle involved.
