A severe bushfire burning in Perth's eastern suburbs has triggered an emergency warning for residents on New Year's Day, with authorities urging people to act immediately to survive.
The warning was issued by Emergency WA around 6am on Monday, 1 January, for people in the areas of Maida Vale, Forrestfield and Kalamunda. The alert stated residents were in direct danger and needed to take urgent action.
Immediate Danger and Evacuation Orders
Emergency services delivered a stark message to the community: "There is a threat to lives and homes." Residents who are able to leave have been strongly urged to "leave now for a safer place," ideally moving in a westerly direction away from the advancing fire front.
"Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger," the official warning emphasised. For those who find it too late or impossible to evacuate, specific shelter-in-place instructions were provided.
They have been told to close all doors and windows and seek shelter in a room before the fire arrives, warning that "the extreme heat will kill you before the flames reach you." The alert also advised it is too dangerous for anyone not currently at home to attempt to return.
Road Closures and Fire Movement
The bushfire is reported to be moving slowly in a westerly direction and, as of the latest update, remains neither contained nor controlled. Its movement has also prompted a 'watch and act' alert for parts of Forrestfield, Lesmurdie and Kalamunda, where residents must stay alert and monitor their surroundings.
Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution due to the fire and downed power lines, which have forced a number of local road closures.
Evacuation Centre and Pet Advice
For those fleeing, an evacuation centre has been established at the High Wycombe Community and Recreation Centre. However, authorities have noted that "alternative arrangements" must be made for pets, with the exception of registered assistance animals, as they are not permitted inside evacuation centres.
All residents are urged to stay up to date with the latest official information and warnings from Emergency WA as the situation develops.
