An intense bushfire, fuelled by a severe heatwave, has caused significant damage to properties on the New South Wales Central Coast, with multiple homes impacted and residents forced to flee.
Emergency Warnings as Fire Spreads South
The blaze broke out on Saturday, approximately one hour's drive north of Sydney, as scorching temperatures gripped the state. The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has issued an urgent emergency warning for the area around Nimbin Road in Koolewong, with the fire front moving in a southerly direction.
Authorities have confirmed that multiple houses have been damaged or destroyed, with many more under direct threat. Residents in the vicinity of Nimbin Rd, Glenrock Pde, Lara St, and Nimala Ave have been instructed to leave immediately.
"Act Now": Urgent Evacuation Orders
The RFS message to the community is stark and clear. "Do not wait. Roads may become blocked or access may change, smoke may reduce visibility," the service stated. They emphasised that leaving at the last minute is deadly and conditions can deteriorate rapidly.
The fire danger is exacerbated by ember attacks, which can start new fires well ahead of the main front. "Embers will be blown long distances ahead of the main fire front starting spot fires, these may impact your home earlier than the main fire front," the RFS warned.
For those who find themselves unable to leave, instructions are to seek shelter in a solid structure. Key steps include:
- Bringing all pets indoors
- Closing all doors and windows
- Keeping water running if possible to help protect the property
Community Response and Shelter
An evacuation centre has been established to assist displaced residents at the Gosford RSL Club. The community is rallying as emergency services continue to battle the blaze under challenging, hot conditions.
The situation remains volatile, and authorities are urging everyone in the affected region to stay informed through official channels and follow all instructions without delay to ensure personal safety.
