A local resident has tragically lost his life while courageously defending his community from a fierce bushfire on Western Australia's south coast.
Desperate Fight to Create Firebreak Ends in Tragedy
A man in his 60s died on Monday afternoon while operating a front-end loader in a desperate bid to establish a firebreak. The incident occurred in West River, near the town of Ravensthorpe, as he confronted the out-of-control blaze.
Police reported that the machinery became engulfed in flames during the operation. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man could not be saved and died at the scene.
"An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death will be conducted by WA Police, who will prepare a report for the coroner," a police spokesperson confirmed.
Fire Continues to Burn, Threatening Properties
The bushfire, which ignited around 2.20pm on Monday, has razed approximately 300 hectares of farmland. It posed a direct threat to several homes in the West River and Fitzgerald Road areas.
As of Tuesday, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) states the blaze is moving slowly in a north-easterly direction. It is currently contained but not controlled.
Firefighters from the bushfire service and volunteer brigades remain on the ground, working to strengthen containment lines around the fire's perimeter.
Community Alerted as Investigation Begins
A Bushfire Watch and Act alert remains active for residents in parts of West River and West Fitzgerald. The warning area is bounded by South Coast Highway, Lake Road, Mallee Road, and Koornong Road within the Shires of Ravensthorpe and Jerramungup.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the West River bushfire. While the origin is still unknown, police have indicated it is not being treated as suspicious.
