Emergency Response at Nerong

Emergency services were called to Little Nungra Road at Nerong, approximately 90 kilometres north of Newcastle, on Monday, December 8, 2025. The call was in response to a report of a concern for welfare.

Port Stephens Hunter police officers arrived to learn that a man had been hit by a tree. Despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics who provided immediate assistance at the scene, the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the location.

A crime scene was established following the fatality, and WorkSafe has been notified of the incident. NSW Police confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Premier's Tribute and Fire Details

NSW Premier Chris Minns identified the victim as a member of the national parks team that was battling the blaze near Bulahdelah. In a statement to Nine, Premier Minns expressed profound sorrow.

"It's a very sad day for firefighters and the NSW community," the Premier said. "We're heartbroken by this news. It's devastating and it's a reminder of what keeps the public safe. This is in many ways a dangerous profession, and we're deeply indebted to the men and women that devote their time to keeping us safe."

He added that authorities were in the process of contacting the firefighter's family and asked for the community's respect for their privacy during this difficult time.

Status of the Bulahdelah Bushfire

The Bulahdelah fire was burning at 'Advice' level on Monday, December 8, and was listed as being controlled. The bushfire continues to burn south of Booral Road and on both sides of the Pacific Highway.

According to the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), the fire has covered over 3414 hectares. Firefighters have successfully held the fire south of Booral Road in the Crawford River area.

However, the southern edge of the fire was still active, burning parallel to the Pacific Highway in a south and southwesterly direction. Travellers in the area have been urged to exercise caution due to ongoing firefighting operations and potential hazards.

The tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers faced by firefighters during Australia's bushfire season, even when a blaze is considered under control.
