WA Farmer Dies in Bushfire Tragedy While Defending Property Near Ravensthorpe
Farmer dies in WA bushfire while defending property

A farmer has tragically lost his life while battling to protect his property from a fast-moving bushfire in Western Australia's south.

A Desperate Fight on the Firebreak

The man, who was in his 60s, was operating a front-end loader to create a firebreak on Monday afternoon when the situation turned deadly. His vehicle was suddenly overrun and engulfed by flames near West River, close to the town of Ravensthorpe in the Goldfields-Esperance region.

Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the man died at the scene. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the area just after 2:20pm following reports that a large bushfire was threatening homes near the intersection of West River Road and Fitzgerald Road.

Community Shattered by Loss

WA Premier Roger Cook described the incident as a "desperately sad situation" and extended his sympathies to the man's family and community. "Our hearts go out to that gentleman and his family," Mr Cook said.

He emphasised how the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of bushfires. "It's just another reminder just how quickly things can turn and how quickly we can have a loss of life. It's a very sad day." The Premier noted that the death would deeply affect the "tight-knit and small community" of the area, leaving a lasting impact.

"A fire is a traumatic event for any community but when it's combined with a loss of life, that's devastating," he added.

Ongoing Threat and Investigation

The fire danger is not yet over for the region. Authorities have issued a Watch and Act alert for people in an area bounded by South Coast Highway, Lake Road, Mallee Road, Fitzgerald Road, and Koornong Road in West River and West Fitzgerald.

Emergency WA warns that "there is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is burning in the area and conditions are changing." The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but is not currently being treated as suspicious.

WA Police will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the farmer's death and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
