Authorities have issued an urgent emergency warning for a dangerous and out-of-control bushfire threatening lives and homes in Western Australia's south. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has declared an imminent threat for parts of West River in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.
Immediate Danger Zone Identified
The emergency warning, issued on Monday, 1 December 2025, applies to the area bounded by South Coast Highway, Koornong Road, Mallee Road, and West River Road. The DFES has stated residents in this danger zone are in immediate peril and must act now to survive. Fire conditions are volatile and can change rapidly without notice, making the situation extremely hazardous.
Urgent Instructions for Residents
Residents who are able to leave safely have been instructed to evacuate the area immediately, heading towards Esperance. Authorities have stressed that people should not adopt a 'wait and see' approach. "Leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger," the official alert warned. For those who find it is already too late or unsafe to depart, the advice is to prepare to shelter in a room with running water inside their home.
In a critical safety directive, DFES has also warned that anyone who is already away from their property must not attempt to return under any circumstances, as conditions are far too dangerous.
Community on High Alert
The fast-moving West River bushfire has placed the entire Ravensthorpe Shire community on high alert. The emergency services are actively managing the incident, but the unpredictable nature of the fire underscores the severe risk to property and life. Residents are urged to monitor official channels for further updates and to follow all instructions from emergency personnel without delay.
