Emergency Warning: Out of Control Bushfire Threatens High Wycombe Homes
Emergency Bushfire Warning for High Wycombe, Kalamunda

An emergency bushfire warning has been issued for residents in parts of High Wycombe, with lives and homes under direct threat from an out of control blaze burning in the City of Kalamunda.

Emergency Warning Issued for Residents

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services escalated the situation to an emergency level at approximately 3:05pm on Wednesday, 7 January 2026. The warning is for people in an area bounded by Brand Road, Sultana Road and Roe Highway.

Authorities have delivered a stark message to residents: it is too late to leave. DFES stated that fire has already impacted key evacuation routes, and attempting to flee now would put lives in extreme danger.

"You need to identify a room in your home where you can shelter from the approaching fire," a DFES spokesperson urged. "You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you before the flames reach you."

Firefighting Efforts and Road Closures

The bushfire was first reported around 2:05pm and is moving in an easterly direction. It remains uncontained and not under control.

Ground crews are battling the flames with up to 13 firefighting appliances, supported by at least one water bomber conducting aerial attacks.

Major transport arteries have been severely affected. Roe Highway is closed in both directions between Berkshire Road and Kalamunda Road. Dramatic footage from Main Roads WA shows sections of the highway shrouded in thick, black smoke, with several spot fires burning in the median strip.

Drivers are being warned to avoid the area, expect heavy smoke, stay alert, and seek alternate routes immediately.

Immediate Actions for Safety

For residents within the emergency warning zone, DFES instructions are clear and non-negotiable. The priority is to shelter in place to survive. Key actions include:

  • Go immediately to the safest room in your home with the lowest risk from fire.
  • Ensure you can easily exit the room if necessary.
  • Close all doors and windows to keep smoke and heat out.
  • Keep yourself informed by listening to emergency broadcasts on ABC Local Radio or checking the DFES website.

The situation continues to evolve rapidly, and the community is urged to follow all official advice as firefighters work to bring the blaze under control.
